The Psychological Impacts of COVID-19

As the COVID-19 pandemic has led to numerous closures of schools, businesses, and gathering places, the psychological impacts of a public health emergency can go largely ignored. This discussion will offer insight and guidance into mental health as many communities around the world struggle to contain the virus while also tending to the demands and needs of ordinary life.

About the Speakers

Dr. Asim Shah is the Executive Vice Chair and Professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and the Department of Community and Family Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine. In September 2016, Dr. Shah was appointed as the Inaugural Vice Chair for Community Psychiatry, which has now become the Division of Community Psychiatry under his leadership as its Chief. He is also Chief of Psychiatry for Ben Taub Hospital/Harris Health System and the Director of Community Behavioral Health Program for Harris Health System. His service is the largest outpatient Mental Health provider in Harris County, with over 100,000 visits a year. 

Dr. Nasar Qureshi is the Founder and CEO and Medical Director of QDx Pathology Services. He has served in a variety of illustrious positions and fellowships in the medical field. He had a fellowship at the United States Public Health and Clinical Microbiology and Immunology at Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Center in New York. During his Fellowship, he was made Director of the first HIV testing laboratory at Mount Sinai. Following his fellowship, he served as Director of Virology Laboratories at Beth Israel Medical Center New York. Dr. Qureshi later joined the Faculty of College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. He eventually joined Bayonne Hospital in New Jersey as Director of Virology and Immunohistochemistry, and later as Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of Lakewood Pathology Laboratories.

Shamila N. Chaudhary (moderator) is President of the American Pakistan Foundation and an international affairs analyst specializing in U.S. foreign policy with a focus on U.S.-Pakistan relations, Pakistan internal politics, and regional issues in South Asia. She is a Senior South Asia Fellow at the Washington D.C.-based New America think tank and a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Her work is regularly cited and published in Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, the New York Times and she has frequently appeared on NPR, CNN, Fox News, and other media outlets.
