APF’s Livelihoods and Entrepreneurship programs are aimed to increase the economic opportunities available to individuals and improve the stability of households and communities. Pakistan is experiencing a growing disparity of income and economic opportunities are very limited for marginalized groups. The 2010 floods exasperated the problem by destroying crops, livestock, and sources of income for thousands of poor families.

APF’s Livelihood and Entrepreneurship programs are currently assisting communities recover their livelihoods from the devastating floods while also maintaining a focus on sustainable and long-term stability.

BRAC

APF has partnered with BRAC to support a Livelihood Recovery Fund for households in areas devastated by the floods. This program has provided grants of PKR 15,000 to 200 households in flood-affected areas immediately after the floods. These grants have enabled the reconstruction of homes, recovery of assets, and livelihood rebuilding. The grant purposes will be based on the damage assessments made by the microfinance credit officers. This program is reaching 200 households, thereby benefiting approximately 1,200 people.

Relief International

APF partnered with Relief International (RI) through its Rapid Livelihoods Rebuilding via Livestock (RLRL) program. This program provides sustainable livelihoods and seeks to improve nutrition and health for communities in the Nowshera region of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province through the distribution of lactating goats. The RLRL program replenishes the lost livestock that are critical to the economic stability of rural families. The livelihoods program reached 765 households in Nowshera, benefiting approximately 3,000 individuals.

Program Overview
RI visited and assessed 30 villages and conducted meetings with local people to discuss implementation strategy.

RI formed and trained several Community Organizations (COs). Each CO is comprised of 10-15 locally respected, politically unaffiliated community members, representing 8-10 households in their community.

RI worked with the COs to identify beneficiaries for the livestock program. Prior to the livestock distribution RI staff verified all beneficiaries through door-to-door visits.

Two vendors of lactating goats were selected after competitive review and quarantine periods. RI prioritized the health, welfare, and quality of the livestock. Quarantine activity included de‐worming, ecto‐parasite control spray, and vaccinations for the goats.

The beneficiaries were provided training on livestock rearing, housing, feeding, and disease management. The training emphasized the prevention of prevailing communicable diseases in the region and included practical demonstrations on live animals. Following the training all 765 beneficiaries were provided with one lactating goat in the selected 5 union councils.
